MAC address
A Media Access Control address is a 48-bit number, often called the "physical address", "Ethernet address", or "hardware address", used at
the lowest network layer. There are three standard formats used to express MAC-level addresses. For example, 2:60:8c:0:76:67, 02-60-8c-00-76-67,
and 0260.8C00.7667 represent the same MAC-level address.
MacTracker
MacTracker (guest/comet) is a program that tracks Port Lists (SwitchMap) data so that you can
look historical information about MACs, ports, etc. It was written by Robert Bubon of COMET.
MaDDash

machine, at http://ps.ncar.xsede.org/maddash-webui/
Part of an electronic mail delivery system which allows a message to be delivered to a list of addressees. Mail exploders are used to
implement mailing lists. Users send messages to a single address (e.g., hacks@somehost.edu) and the mail exploder takes care of delivery to the
individual mailboxes in the list.
mail gateway
A machine that connects two or more electronic mail systems (especially dissimilar mail systems on two different networks) and transfers
messages between them. Sometimes the mapping and translation can be quite complex, and generally it requires a store-and-forward scheme whereby
the message is received from one system completely before it is transmitted to the next system after suitable translations.
ADVA's name for their customer website. ADVA pays SalesForce to handle ADVA's online web presence. When you log in to ADVA's website, you get logged in to a
server at SalesForce. ADVA tech support guys are supposed to refer to the ADVA support website as "Max Portal" to
satisfy marketing, but they may refer to it as "Salesforce".
management Ethernet interface on a Juniper switch. If the switch is part of a Virtual Chassis, the me0 interface is disabled and the chassis
is accessed via the vme interface.
MEA-APPROVE
Unapproved plug type. This is an alarm that can be reported by ADVA equipment. It means that the the physically inserted plug is not an
approved plug. This can happen because we've inserted an SFP in an R7 shelf that isn't an ADVA-brand SFP, though it may work fine.
MEA-DIFFER
Mismatch of plug equipment versus provisioned attributes due to a difference in specifications. This is an alarm that can be reported by ADVA
equipment. It means that the physically inserted plug exceeds the provisioned RATE or REACH settings. Note that in this case, the plug may be
able to provide signal transport, but the specifications of the signal may not conform to the provisioned settings (e.g. the optical power level
may be too high).
MEC
Multichassis EtherChannel, a Cisco Layer 2 multipathing technology
MED
Multi-Exit Discriminator, an optional nontransitive BGP attribute that can be attached to an advertised prefix.
medium
The material used to support the transmission of data. Examples include copper wire, coaxial cable, optical fiber, or electromagnetic wave
(microwave).
Master Email File, the list of UCAR email addresses, generated by the Database Services

Merit
Merit Network, Inc. maintains a routing registry called the RADb(Routing Assets Database). NETS pays Merit a yearly fee for update access to the
RADb.

2062 S. 66th Street
Boulder, CO 80303
Also known as MAR.
MGCP
Media Gateway Control Protocol
mgd
The management daemon on a Juniper device. mgd manages the configuration of the router and all user commands. The management process is
responsible for notifying other processes when a new configuration is committed. It also spawns a CLI process when a user logs in.
MIB
Management Information Base. A collection of objects that can be accessed via a network management protocol like SNMP. NETS stores MIB files
in the /usr/share/snmp/mibs/ directory on netserver, which is where the Net-SNMP command suite (snmpwalk, etc.) looks for MIB files.
Media Interface Connector. The most common connector on the ends of FDDI cables.
MICA
Modem ISDN Channel Aggregation
MIF
Management Information Format
MIGS
Mainframe/Internet Gateway Server
MILNET
MILitary NETwork. Originally part of the ARPANET, MILNET was partitioned in 1984 to make it possible for military installations to have
reliable and secure network service, while the ARPANET continued to be used for research.
MIME
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions
MiniMMAC
A small version of an MMAC. It has up to 13 ports, which may be AUI, thin, twisted pair, or fiber.
MINT
Millennium Infrastructure Network Technology
MJ
Major. An ADVA Notification Code (NC) that indicates that a service affecting condition has developed and an urgent corrective action is
required.
ML
Mesa Laboratory of NCAR, at 1850 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder, CO.
Managed Modem Service, a product sold by Level 3. In 2007, NETS
stopped using a physical RAS device to provide dial-up service to UCAR staff. We bought MMS instead.
MMTL
Modem Management Technology Licenses (Cisco)
MN
Minor. An ADVA Notification Code (NC) that indicates the existence of a non-service affecting condition and that corrective action should be
taken in order to prevent a more serious (for example, service affecting) fault.
